在我阅读早期,巴尔扎克有着无与伦比的吸引力。在人民文学出版社从1984年至1998年陆续出版三十卷本的《巴尔扎克全集》时,我几乎见一本买一本,买一本读一本。被巴尔扎克吸引,最初是热爱傅雷的译文;当进入巴尔扎克的世界后,又不知不觉,被他汪洋恣肆的创造力所震骇,同时也着迷他笔下数千个人物的交叉出场。时至今日,他笔下的拉斯蒂涅、伏脱冷、拉法埃尔、赛查·皮罗托、欧也妮·葛朗台、毕安训、纽沁根等等人物都栩栩如生地活跃在我脑中。对作品的热爱必然导致对作者本人的关注。巴尔扎克辛酸与奋斗的一生在我心中留下了一个伟大作家的形象。奇怪的是,不少人诟病巴尔扎克对功名的追逐和对财富不加掩饰的渴求,但又有谁愿意始
In my early years of reading, Balzac had an unparalleled appeal. When People’s Literature Publishing House published thirty volumes of Complete Works of Balzac from 1984 to 1998, I almost saw one book for one, one book for one.
