Accurately dividing most of the history in history is not an easy task, yet defining the space age is not difficult. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched an artificial Earth satellite, a 184-pound shell that landed around the Earth every 96 minutes. As a result, the space age approached us with few warnings. Less than four years after the launch of the first primitive satellite, Yuri Gagarin, a 27-year-old fighter pilot from the Soviet Union, became the first man orbiting the Earth.
