Scientists report that this is what happened in Lake Tanganyika in Africa in recent years. The increase in water temperature has affected the normal mixing of lake water. The result is that the small creatures that make up the bottom of the food chain are not as rich as they used to be. Lake Tanganyika is the second largest freshwater lake in the world, after Lake Baikal in Russia. Some parts of this African lake are more than 1,000 meters deep. In such a large lake, nutrients often sink to the bottom of the lake.
