For language teaching to achieve breakthrough reform, we must first make an assessment of the current status of Chinese language teaching. Mr. Wu Xintian, Shandong Provincial Teaching and Research Office, wrote an article in the sixth issue of “Chinese Language Sensing” in 1994. The author has quite the same feeling about the analysis of the current status of Chinese teaching. But where are the fundamental problems and what are the causes of these problems? The author believes that it is necessary to conduct in-depth discussions. When we discuss this issue, we must analyze historically and dialectically. At the same time, we must start from a brand-new perspective. Otherwise, it will not be able to jump out of the old ideological track, and it will be difficult to achieve “breakthrough” changes.
