Purpose: To determine whether tumor growth can be inhibited by blocking the binding of the hyaluronic acid cell surface receptor CD44H to its ligand. METHODS: The effects of CD44H and immunoglobulin soluble fusion protein (CD44Rg) on the growth of human Namalwa lymphoma cells transfected and stably expressing CD44H were observed. RESULTS: CD44Rg inhibited the ability of Namalwa tumor cells to form tumors in nude mice, but had no effect on the growth of the cells in vitro. Conclusion: The disruption of the role of CD44H and its physiological ligands may be a new means of controlling the growth of tumors in vivo.
