自20世纪70年代末以来至今,学术界围绕着儒学是否为宗教的问题展开了一场激烈争论。在这一争论进程中,学术界对宗教的理解大致经历了从宗教的一般特征到宗教的功能再到宗教的超越性本质的认识过程,与此相应,关于儒教是否为宗教的争论实质上经历了三个不断走向深入的阶段。这场持久论争具有重要的理论意义和现实意义的,它有力地推动了学术界对儒学和宗教的双重理解,并逐渐引发了学界乃至国人对传统文化主体性的自觉;同时对儒学当代形态的建构也具有重要启发意义,在一定程度上指出了儒学研究的未来走向。
