This article examines the status of translation from the past, present and future of translation studies. The author first reviews the history of translation studies, with a particular focus on the transition from mechanical to metaphor to metonymy. Then the author discusses an important change in contemporary social sciences (mainly anthropology and cultural studies), from focusing solely on material culture to recognizing the importance of language in a given culture. Meta-metonymy of Professor Maria Tymockzo is the main framework by which the author examines translation. In this framework, the author suggests that the future of translation research depends on the critical dialogue between translation studies scholars and translators and other social science scholars.
