提起早期的中国青年出版社,人们马上想起《卓娅和舒拉的故事》、《普通一兵》和《牛虻》……而它所出版的《青年英雄的故事》和《董存瑞的故事》,前者印了1158000册,后者和同名电影几乎同时发行。上述这些书真是传遍大江南北。鉴于这些读物在促进青年革命化方面所起的巨大作用,文学编辑室主任江晓天特别成立了一个传记文学组,让张羽和我专主其事。 收集材料,研究选题,物色作者,跑断了腿。半年过去了,就是发不出稿子。我那时年轻气盛,不免跟张羽发了几句牢骚:
