Joseph Heller is a representative writer of black humor and absurdism in the United States. His works are closely linked with the real life of the United States. The 22nd Military Regulation of the novel is one of his representative works. The novel, based on a U.S. Air Force base stationed in Pianosa during World War II, shows the author’s morbid, disorganized and absurd American society. “Article 22 of the Military Regulations” represents an obstacle that can not be escaped or an insurmountable predicament. This symbolic meaning embodies the author’s contemplation of human destiny and the hidden worries of the living conditions.
