The history of acupuncture anesthesia dates back to August 30,1958 in Shanghai First People\'s Hospital,Shanghai,China.Dr.YIN Hui-zhu,an otolaryngologist conducted a tonsillectomy under acupuncture of Hegu(LI 4)in each hand without any other anesthetics with Dr.ZHUANG Xin-liang,an anesthetist.Subsequently,acupuncture anesthesia was reported in many other operations from cardiac surgery,craniotomy,total laryngectomy to caesarean section.From 1958 to 1965,more than 8,700 operations were conducted throughout the country under acupuncture anesthesia according to other literature.(1)With the development of economy,Chinese people required better medical service in comfortable and painless operations as well as safe anesthesia.Since it was difficult to obtain complete painlessness by acupuncture anesthesia,this technique became less popular since 1980s.It has been realized that it was difficult to provide ideal anesthesia for surgery through acupuncture itself,but acupuncture could reduce the consumption of anesthetic agents.The term\'acupuncture anesthesia\'was therefore replaced by\'acupuncture assisted anesthesia\'or\'combined acupuncture-drug anesthesia\'.(2)We have performed many endoscopic thyroid surgeries under general anesthesia and conventional thyroid surgeries under acupuncture anesthesia.(3)This is the first time we perform endoscopic partial thyroidectomy under acupuncture assisted general anesthesia.
