在显微镜下连续观察,用电影摄影机跟踪拍摄,及试验研究的结果证实:松毛虫赤眼蜂两性生殖,产生雌雄子代;孤雌生殖仅产雄性子代。寄生于同一柞蚕卵内的松毛虫赤眼蜂,雄蜂较雌蜂早1~1.5天羽化。雄蜂羽化后,在寄主卵内即与刚脱下蛹包膜、尚未展翅的雌蜂,或发育后期的雌蛹交尾。羽化前5小时的雌蛹中,有59%以上的个体已经受精,羽化后可产生雌雄两性子代;但羽化前24小时以上的雌蛹,虽能观察到雄蜂有与之交尾的动作,但其产生的子代均为雄性。雌蜂在卵内交尾后,咬破卵壳出来。未见到前人所报道的雄蜂先咬破卵壳,在寄主卵外等待雌蜂交尾的现象 雌蜂产卵时,产卵管在寄主卵壳上朝左右两个方向轮流旋转钻孔,其旋转角度不超过360度,转速1~2转/秒。同时由产卵管分泌一种液体。
