Researchers at the M.D. Anderson Hospital and the Oncology Institute at the University of Texas in the United States are currently studying the effects of systemic and topical hyperthermia on cancer. Dr. O. Howard Frazier, assistant professor of surgery, is modifying heart and lung machines for systemic hyperthermia. This is a thermal regulator that automatically heats or cools the flowing blood based on data from temperature probes placed in the patient’s esophagus and bladder. In vivo monitors can make the patient’s temperature control within 0.1 ℃. This method first holds the patient at 41.5 ° C for several hours and then raises the temperature to 43 ° C using a recent “pulsed hot” technique and then drops it to 41.5 ° C. He said it is still too early to assess the outcome, given the small number of cases so far.
