物种的多样性导致生态系统的稳定性,多样性意味着系统中物质、能量、信息流通和传递的渠道多,调节补偿的控制机能强,稳定性好,同化异化的代谢功能健全,生产力高.如西双版纳热带雨林生态系统,500平方米内仅高等植物就多达140种,种类繁多的植物又为多种多样的动物、微生物的生存和繁殖创造了有利条件.它们相互依存、彼此制约,形成复杂的食物链,组成生产力高、稳定性好的生态系统.在这样的生态系统中,即使部分物种发生变化甚至消失也不会危及整个系统.
