谢海燕,原名海砚,1910年出生于广东省揭阳县一个非常普通的船工家庭。他9岁时开始从师学习中国画,15岁时即可帮人画扇面、肖像、帐楣等,17岁时又以优异成绩被其所就读的汕头轶土美术学校西洋画科破格聘为美术教员。两年后谢海燕考入上海中华艺术大学西洋画科毕业班,师从陈抱一、陈望道等教授。毕业后又于1930年春东渡日本,就读东京帝国美术学校西洋画科,学习西方绘画和美术史论,得到北昤吉、金原省吾、板垣鹰穗等众多日本名师之指授。1935年,谢海燕应聘任上海美专教授兼教务长,开始全权襄理上海美
Xie Haiyan, formerly known as Haiyan, was born in 1910 in Jieyang County, Guangdong Province, a very ordinary boatman family. At the age of 9, he started to study Chinese painting at the age of nineteen. He was able to help people to draw fan, portrait and cheek at the age of fifteen. At the age of 17, he was again accepted by the Western Painting School of Shantou Yi Art School as an art teacher at the age of 17 . Two years later, Xie became a graduate of the Western Art Department of Shanghai China University of Arts. He studied under the professors Chen Baoyi and Chen Wangdao. After graduation, he went to Japan in the spring of 1930 and studied at the western art department of the Tokyo Imperial Academy. He studied Western painting and the history of fine arts history, and obtained the acclaim of numerous Japanese masters such as Beijieji, Jinyuan Shugo, Itagaki Eike. In 1935, Xie Haiyan should be appointed professor and dean of Shanghai United University, began to fully support the Shanghai United States
