Recent developments in hysteretic energy absorbers provide practical isolation systems that are mounted on the bottom of many types of structures. The seismic load that is borne by the normal lateral strength of the structure is reduced by this vibration isolation system. Therefore, the plastic reserve needed for earthquake resistance is no longer essential. This isolation system can be effectively applied to many kinds of building patterns and structures. The structures can also be designed to prevent structural and non-structural damage with a high degree of safety. A specific hysteresis damper limits the lateral movement of the bottom of the structure to within 10 cm. When this small movement occurs, the lateral flexibility required for the vibration isolation system is easily achieved. For many structures, a rubber pad is sufficient.
