Elizabeth Blackwell is a British-born woman physician (医师). She was born in 1821 in England. Her father decided to move the family to the United States in 1832 after his factory was destroyed by fire. It is said that she turned to studying medicine after a close friend who was dying said she wouldn’t have suffered so much if her physician had been a woman. Elizabeth knew that no woman had ever been permitted to study in a medical school. But she began to think about the idea seriously after the friend who had suggested it died.
Elizabeth discussed it with her family. When she graduated from Geneva Medical College in 1849, she became the first woman in America to earn the M. D. degree. She was not offered many opportunities as a young female physician, she opened her own office two years later. Her younger sister Dr. Emily Blackwell, joined her in 1856. Together with Dr. Marie Zakrzewska, they opened the New York Infirmary (醫院) for Women and Children in 1857. After establishing the infirmary, Elizabeth Blackwell went on a year-long lecture tour of Great Britain. Her lectures and personal example inspired more women to take up medicine as a profession.
When the American Civil War broke out, the Blackwell sisters aided in nursing efforts. After the end of the war, Elizabeth Blackwell carried out a plan that she had developed together with her friend Florence Nightingale while in England. She opened the Women’s Medical College with her sister. This college was operated under her sister’s management. She moved to England the next year. There, she helped to organize the National Health Society and she founded the London School of Medicine for Women.

It may seem as if Mother’s Day was invented by a company named Hallmark, but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to Mom for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals—although their celebrations didn’t involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner. A more recent tradition was Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers’ houses.
Mother’s Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held “Mothers’ Work Days” to promote health and hygiene(衛生) at home and in the workplace.
Jarvis’s work inspired another 19th-century woman, Julia Ward Howe. In 1870, Howe published her “Mother’s Day Proclamation”, which envisioned the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace.
It was Jarvis’s daughter Anna who succeeded in getting Mother’s Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died, in May 1905, Anna started holding yearly ceremony on the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to have the day made a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in enlisting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother’s Day. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday. It wasn’t long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating. “I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,” she said.

   A. John Wanamaker.      B. Julia Ward Howe.      C. Woodrow Wilson. D. Anna Jarvis.
  10. Why did Anna Jarvis object to Mother’s Day at last?
   A. Because it was an emotional day.
   B. Because the festival was not profitable.
   C. Because the celebrations went against the original spirit.
   D. Because the day was buried under greeting cards and candy.
  11. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
   A. The Objection to Mother’s Day
   B. The Argument on Celebrating Mother’s Day

The COVID-19 and flu are both respiratory infectious diseases, with similar symptoms including fever and cough, but they aren’t the same.
Both the COVID-19 and flu are diseases caused by a virus. In the case of flu the pathogens (病原體) are flu viruses, and for COVID-19, it is a novel coronavirus (新型冠状病毒).
Common symptoms for flu and novel coronavirus are nearly identical—fever, cough and tiredness sometimes sore throat and diarrhea. In several cases they result in pneumonia (肺炎) and even death in the worst cases. Flu has seasonal ups and downs. Although it can exist all year round, the virus infects more people in winter and spring. As for the novel coronavirus, the median age for the infected is 51. But the novel coronavirus is a brand new virus no one has total immunity no matter their age.
Both the flu and the novel coronavirus are transmitted in the similar ways, by direct contact with infected patients or small droplets from the nose or mouth when a person with virus coughs or breathes.
For the novel coronavirus, there is also a risk for aerosol transmission (气溶胶传播). In health facilities, people may catch the virus if they breathed in aerosol, the suspension of find solid or liquid particles in the air, which have been contaminated by the virus. The novel coronavirus has also been found in patients’ fecal (排泄物) samples, but fecal-oral transmission does not appear to be a major transmission route. 12. What can we learn about the novel coronavirus?
   A. It has seasonal changes.                     B. It causes less deaths than flu.
   C. It may spread among people of all ages. D. It only spread after people show symptoms.
  13. Which of the following is NOT the way the novel coronations transmit?

   B. raise people’s awareness of protecting their health
   C. prove that COVID-19 won’t cause human deaths
   D. provide some suggestions to avoid COVID-19 infection
  15. What does the passage mainly talk about?
   A. New treatment on the novel coronavirus.
   B. The latest research on the COVID-19 and flu.
   C. The difference between the novel coronavirus and flu.
   D. How to identify the COVID-19 and flu on symptoms.
