向往之旅鄯善县的南山矿区,是该县南部一片广袤的戈壁沙漠地带,随着库木塔格沙漠进入到了塔克拉玛干沙漠,戈壁随着沙漠走,直至完全被沙漠吞没。“塔克拉玛干”维吾尔语是“进去出不来”的意思,可想而知它有多么的恐怖。上天是公平的,寸草不生的戈壁沙漠,地底下却埋藏有无数的宝藏。就在这南山一带,发现了铁、铜、金、大理石等十几种矿藏,且储量丰富,易于开采,便形成了一处开采区,因在火焰山的南部,故命名为“南山矿区”。
