现已发现两型11β羟基类固醇脱氢酶(11βHSD):11βHSD1为氧化还原酶,催化皮质醇与其代谢产物之间的相互转化;11βHSD2则为专一氧化酶,只催化皮质醇的失活。11βHSD1在体内分布广泛,功能目前尚不清楚。11βHSD2主要存在于盐皮质激素靶器官,肾脏11βHSD2通过降解糖皮质激素保护盐皮质激素受体的特异性,肾脏此酶的缺乏,可以导致严重高血压。胎盘11βHSD2通过降解母体高浓度的糖皮质激素保证胎儿的正常发育,胎盘此酶的异常可以导致胎儿宫内发育迟缓。此酶还可能与应激、糖尿病、退行性神经变性等有关
