徐向前(1901-1990年),原名徐象谦,山西省五台县人,中国人民解放军的缔造者和领导者之一,共和国元帅。他于1927年3月加入中国共产党,曾任工农革命军第四师师长,红四方面军总指挥。抗日战争时期,他任八路军第一纵队司令员、陕甘宁晋绥联防军副司令员兼参谋长。解放战争时期,徐向前历任晋冀鲁豫军区副司令员、华北军区副司令员兼第一兵团司令员兼政委。新中国成立后,他历任中央人民政府人民革命军事委员会总参谋长、中共中央军委副主席、国务院副总理兼国防部部长、全国人大副委员长等职。1990年9月,徐向前在北京逝世。
Xu Xiangqian (1901-1990), formerly known as Xu Xiangqian, was born in Wutai County, Shanxi Province, one of the founders and leaders of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, and Marshal of the Republic. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in March 1927 and served as the fourth division of the Workers ’and Peasants’ Revolutionary Army and the commander of the Fourth Red Army. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, he was the commander of the first column of the Eighth Route Army, the deputy commander and chief of staff of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia-Jinsai anti-personnel armies. During the war of liberation, Xu Xiangqian served as deputy commander of the military region of Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Military Region, deputy commander of the North China Military Region and commander and commissar of the First Corps. After the founding of New China, he served as chief of staff of the People’s Revolutionary Military Commission of the Central People’s Government, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the CPC, vice premier of the State Council and minister of defense and vice chairman of the NPC. In September 1990, Xu Xiangqian passed away in Beijing.
