The Niba village in the valley is slightly lower than the rest of the Tibetan area and has a relatively warm climate. It was just after June that the barley was harvested. Early this morning, I saw layers of terraced fields turned golden overnight, and the matured grains of full-bodied wheat bowed head down and swaying heavily in the summer sun’s wind. The women in the village started the hardest workings in a year in every field - the young man. The soil is soft in the ground, and women do not cut the barley with a scythe, but instead use their hands to pull the pieces together. Afterwards, cut off the wheat ears with an iron fork and put them in their pockets. The mules were transported back home on that day and basked in the shed of the roof.
