The Chinese people on both sides of the strait have special preferences for their traditional medicine and medicine. However, due to the unbalanced development of the traditional Chinese medicine on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, the Taiwan authorities’ negative attitude towards the Chinese mainland’s access to Taiwan and the problems of the Chinese medicine itself have hindered the development of cross-Strait trade in Chinese medicine. 1. Trade in Traditional Chinese Medicine on Both Sides of the Taiwan Straits Due to restrictions on geographical environment and climatic conditions in Taiwan, self-produced Chinese herbal medicines are unable to meet market demand, thus constraining the development of traditional Chinese medicine in Taiwan. Every year, Chinese herbal medicines need to be imported from other countries and regions. In particular, the demand for Chinese medicines in Taiwan has increased in recent years. The amount of Chinese herbal medicines imported each year is considerable. In 1986, the consumption value of Chinese herbal medicines was as high as NT$10 billion. Due to the abundance of medicinal plants in the mainland and the long history and variety of Chinese patent medicines, various kinds of clinical drugs are used. Therefore, there is a great demand for Chinese herbal medicines and proprietary Chinese medicines in the mainland of Taiwan. Even before 1979, the economic relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait were completely isolated. The trade in Chinese medicine in Taiwan has never been interrupted. Taiwan passed its own machine in Hong Kong
