白日升看到了欧洲文化与中国文化在形式上的根本区别:叙述重在讲故事,关键在于事理而非理论,它是一种潜移默化的熏陶,一种和风细雨式的教化.因此,在白日升看来,适合中国人天赋的福传方式,不是让基督信仰以欧洲的文化形式,即它的论证形式,或者说它的神哲学形式,而是让它以圣经原本的叙述形式出现在中国人的眼前.圣经一旦译成中文,进入中国人习惯的叙述方式内,成为中国人的日常叙述之一,那将不单是一次文化的融合,更可能是一种新文化的诞生.基督的福音只有一个,基督的文化却不止一种,不单有欧洲的基督文化,也会有中国的基督文化.白日升通过翻译圣经推动的教会本地化,无疑是向着这一目标的设想和计划.
