Grieg is Norway’s most loved and most influential composer. Debussy called his music “a pink candy full of snowflakes,” which, although ridiculed, is an undeniable truth. Grieg is essentially a lyrical micro-pictorial artist who combines the romance of sweetness with a feature called the Nordic. He is by no means the first Scandinavian nationalist composer (though sometimes he is often referred to as him), but he is indeed the first Norwegian composer to win a large European audience. The simplicity of the tricks he needed to play his piano pieces made his chromatic harmony more widespread. He also loves the use of hollow fifths and dictation in his works, all of which reflect the Norwegian national style.
