“Everyone is an animate
water drop,
tender yet tough.
That constant dropping wears the stone is not a myth.
Success will come with constant efforts.”
—Preface of Water Drops
This is a novel about the disabled. Disabled is a special group and even some of marginalization. Life is always not easy for the disabled and works on them are either brimmed with pathos to move people to tears or filled with strong wills to inspire people. That is indeed subjective. The novel, instead of describing the difficulties of the disabled to gain sympathy or highlighting their indomitable spirits to inspire others, sincerely and honestly writes about their normal life and life courses.
Wang Xingang, working for the Guangdong Association of Disabled Writers, often makes contact with various disabled friends in the association. Based on that experience, Wang with a unique perspective and an exquisite description tells us that life of the disabled is not always soaked in tears; on the contrary, they can also enjoy a rich and colorful life. In fact, except for their physical defects, there is no difference in terms of the living needs and life pursuits between the disabled and the ordinary ones. They have their dreams and want to live a better life just like Qiaohua in the novel who strives to change her fate. They are also longing for love and being loved. They have the right to pursue happiness as Cao Yimu and Yu Yang did in the novel. They also have worries and laughters. They can also be humorous and live life as we do.
The Water Drops written by Wang Xingang really appeals to me and reminds me of the impressive memory when I was working in Shenzhen. As Leo Tolstoy said in Anna Karenina that “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way”, I shall say placid lives are all alike; every miserable life is miserable in its own way.
Some people may think this work is customized for the disabled or just can attract the attention of this group. I disagree. As detective novels are not merely popular among the criminal investigation polices and science magazines are not only read by the researchers, I believe this novel will not cause repercussions among the disabled for it penetrates into all aspects of life, and it certainly will spark the resonance among the ordinary people.
