The use of high-power generators (such as lasers) as the source of infrared spectroscopy results in a significant increase in measurement sensitivity. This is because most lasers emit far more power than conventional infra-red generators. This property is particularly beneficial for the determination of aqueous solutions because the high power of the laser compensates for the internal absorption of water (the internal absorption of water is strong over most of the wavelength range). Because of the few lasers that are currently tunable over a wide wavelength range, these instruments are primarily used for the measurement of individual absorbance bands, recording of concentrations, and the sensitivity of some molecules or ion concentrations as a function of time.
