秦始皇实行文化专制主义,知识分子遭到了灭顶性的灾难。此后,有名无名的儒生的动向分当官、被坑杀、逃亡、参加农民起义、助刘反秦、降汉、教书和著述等方面。与其它学派相比,儒学在秦代虽也受到严重的打击,但仍有它的地位,为其它学派所远远不及。秦始皇“坑儒”时,公子扶苏以“诸生皆诵法孔子”为由要求秦始皇赦免被坑之人,这有力地否定了秦始皇“反儒”之说,否则扶苏是绝不敢在秦始皇面前说出如此违禁的话的。事实证明:儒学的生命力十分顽强,在朝则美政,在下则美俗,很易为大多数人包括统治阶级所承认和接受。因此,在封建社会里,不论处于顺境还是逆境,儒生总能找到立足、生存于一方的天地,这为儒学发展史所证实。在秦也不例外。
