Mixing barley and oats with field peas can increase feed yield and improve feed quality. The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of two barley varieties, two oat varieties, and different grain-pea seeding rates on feed production, crude protein content (CP) and nitrogen production. Barley varieties are “Bowman” and “Horsford”, and oat varieties are “Dumont” and “Magnum”. The feed produced by Horsford, Magnum is equal to or more than the feed produced by Bowman, Dumont (P ≤ 0.05), either net or mixed. Feed production is unaffected when grains are mixed at seeding rates equal to or greater than the net crop, while feed production decreases when the seeding rate is only half net. Feed production was not affected by pea seeding, but in one of four environments, three of the three environments experienced increases in CP per year as seeding increased. Feed production is unaffected by mixing. These data indicate that the grain composition in the barley-pea and oat-pea blend should be sowed at or above the net seeding rate in order to obtain the highest feed yields. The dietary CP content increased with the relative proportion of pea broadcasts in the mix, but had no effect on feed N production because the contribution of grain to the yield was greater than the pea contribution to the yield.
