Delco Systems has developed a new gyro, the hemispherical resonator gyro (HRG), that can be ideally applied to the strapdown navigation system. Because of its simple structure, it has higher reliability than other existing sensors. A fault tolerant navigation system has been developed to actually test this technology to show the capabilities of this instrument. At the end of 1989, the system had successfully completed the flight test. This fault-tolerant navigation system consists of six separate sensor channels with paired gyroscopes and accelerometers per channel. Each channel uses a microprocessor, programmed in C to control the output of the sensor and compensate for temperature errors. The system has a central navigation processor, using Ada language programming, the data of each independent sensor channel together for redundant management, and gives an optimized navigation calculation results. The dodecahedron structure that mounts these meters allows the redundant inertia measurement axis to be in the best alignment. The redundant management performance tests of these sensors were completed with a full complement of intensive simulation tests.
