金陵在中国历代帝王陵墓考古上是一个缺环。致缺之因,主要是历史上遭到人为破坏。金太祖在天辅七年(1123)死于部堵泺西行宫,葬于上京宫城西南,建宁神殿,无陵号。金太宗在天会十三年(1135)正月死于明德官,二月建和陵,将太祖迁和陵,太宗亦于三月下葬和陵。金熙宗皇统四年(1144)撤和陵称号,以太祖陵为睿陵,以太宗陵为恭陵。这两座陵都在上京附近,太祖陵在宫城西南,今所在的夯土台
