Amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) continuously monitors brain electrical activity through a single-channel system to enhance neurological monitoring and reflect brain function. Because of its simple operation and easy bedside monitoring, aEEG is clinically suitable for assessing brain function and its prognosis in this special group of neonates. The current aEEG in neonatal wards is mainly used to assess the prognosis of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and epilepsy in term infants and the prognosis of intraventricular hemorrhage and periventricular leukomalacia in preterm infants. This article briefly reviews aEEG principles, interpretation methods, clinical significance, limitations and possible future directions.
