In September 1991, WHO and UNICEF reported to the Secretary-General of the United Nations that 80% of the world’s children had achieved their immunization goals. The result of 10 years of hard work involving millions of individuals and organizations around the world is that more than 3 million children and more than 400,000 paralytic polio cases are now prevented each year now. Equally important to the achievement of the immunization goal itself is the establishment of an extended system that will allow them to vaccinate 4 to 5 vaccinations against each of the more than 100 million children in their first year of life. Most countries are using this system for other necessary services. In Asia, in particular, immunization networks are being used to combat diarrhea, acute respiratory infections and V_A deficiency.
