童养媳作为一类特殊的群体,是封建社会蛮婚陋俗的产物。长期以来对此类形象及其命运的文学书写相对比较匮乏,直到新文化运动之后,童养媳这一形象群体才大量进入现代文学视阈。作家们或是尖锐地抨击封建传统制度和习俗对她们的戕害,或是批判其愚昧落后的生存状态,或是悲悯其苦难的命运,或是展现其在被物化、被奴化以及自我异化的道路上挣扎的痛楚,童养媳形象成了作家认识社会、拷问人性、反映时代的一个重要视角和凭借。
