In response to the sudden threat of low-altitude cruise missiles and aircraft in the immediate area, shipboard Phalanx systems were now initially produced by the U.S. Navy in the eleven years since the study began in 1968. “Phalanx” is a 24/7 automatic close-range weapon system (CIWS) that uses an M61AI six-barrel “Volkan” 20mm Grenade. As a result of IDR’s objections, General Dynamics (the maker of the phalanx) and the U.S. Navy emphasized that in a “fight” or “death” scenario in which the missile attacked the long-range and medium-range defenses of the ship, Anti-aircraft guns in the point of defense system is a highly efficient and rapid response weapons.
