Whether biotechnology can solve the problem of salt tolerance in crops is still hard to predict too early, but the seriousness of this problem is a cause for widespread concern. Low levels of freshwater supply, excessive irrigation, and natural evaporation and mineral evaporation all cause an increase in salt concentration. One solution is to cultivate some salt-tolerant crops. Research on these crops includes: Finding new ways to apply some of the naturally occurring salt-tolerant plants called salinities. Some crop varieties that are considered to have higher than average salt resistance levels are identified and enhanced using conventional breeding techniques. Introduction of salt-tolerant genes into existing plants using recombinant DNA methods.
