美国传教士明恩溥通过其所著的《中国人的气质》一书,总结了中国人的26个特性,引证丰富,文笔生动,或褒或贬,无不言之成据。时至今日,让人读了之后仍觉发醒与深思。但是该书主要从反面角度来解读中国人的民族特征,揭露了中国人的许多不良素质。虽然明恩溥在文中也力求做到公允客观,而且他在中国农村生活三十余年也确实观察到了许多中国人的真实现象。但是作为外国传教士,由于他难以真正地融入中国社会难以正确地理解和把握中国的民族文化,只能以西方人的标准来看待中国事物,以至于以西方民族种族优越感和资产阶级的生活方式和价值观的极端傲慢态度来审视和丑化中国民众,导致他只能看到中国人的一个侧面。
Through his book The Temperament of the Chinese, American missionary Ming-pu has summed up 26 Chinese characteristics with rich quotations, vivid or commendable or derogatory quotations. Today, people still feel awakened and thoughtful after reading. However, this book mainly interprets the national characteristics of Chinese people from the negative angle and exposes many undesirable qualities of Chinese people. Although Min-pu also strove to be fair and objective in his essay, and he has lived in rural China for more than 30 years, he has indeed observed the true phenomena of many Chinese people. However, as a foreign missionary, he can not really understand and grasp China’s national culture because it is difficult for him to truly integrate into Chinese society. He can only treat Chinese things in terms of Westerners’ standards so that he takes advantage of Western ethnic superiority and bourgeois life Methods and values of extreme arrogance to examine and vilify the Chinese people, resulting in that he can only see one aspect of the Chinese.
