Until recently, the state viewed science and scientists essentially as masters of trying to solve particular problems. In the past, science was considered a mysterious thing, with little or no reference to everyday life or international affairs. Our time, perhaps this year, will be seen as a turning point in history as heads of state and senior policy makers are taking science and scientists seriously and are no longer concerned with the marginal benefit or intellectual interest of the minority. The broader environment, the environmental impact of humankind, has become a major factor in considering economic issues, energy policies, agricultural policies and many others.
