Bakhtin’s theory of polyphony originated from his unique study of Dostoevsky’s novel, and its core is the philosophy of dialogue. The hero of the novel expresses his own thoughts in an independent and equal voice, while the novel of Kafka reveals the other aspect of the basic human situation - the impossible dialogue. This article takes Kafka ’s further development of Bakhtin’ s theory of polyphonic novels by using the non - dialogic scene embodied in Castle.
