霍桑是是美国19世纪影响最大的浪漫主义小说家,他的作品大多以宗教为创作背景,《红字》是他的代表作,纵观这部作品,我们不难看出,霍桑继承和肯定了清教的积极方面,但是更重要的是他通过对人性的层层剖析展现,用贯穿始终的“自我救赎”方式来达到对人物的重构,展现主人公追求自由的美好愿望以及对传统社会下清教思想的不满和反抗,本文通过对小说《红字》的解说和分析,来探讨作者对清教社会的彷徨和质疑,以及对清教限制自由、压抑人性的反抗。
Hawthorne is the most influential romantic novelist in the 19th century in the United States. Most of his works are based on religion, and “Scarlet Letter” is his masterpiece. Throughout this work, we can easily see that Hawthorne inherited and affirmed Puritanism, but more importantly, through his analysis of the human nature, it shows that using the consistent “self-salvation” method to achieve the reconstruction of characters, showing the protagonist’s pursuit of freedom, as well as the desire for freedom In this paper, through the commentary and analysis of the novel “The Scarlet Letter”, this paper explores the author’s misunderstanding and questioning of the Puritan society, as well as the resistance to the Puritan restriction of freedom and repression of human nature.
