英语阅读教学尽管一直居于英语教学的重要地位,但是教学效果却总是不尽如人意。如何提高学生的的阅读能力一直受到英语教师们的重视和研究,19世纪70年代中期逐步形成和发展了图式理论,根据该理论,人们已经掌握的知识与知识结构是当前认识活动的基础,因此在英语阅读教学过程中,我么不应该一味的强调阅读技能的培养,而应该是在巩固英语基础知识,提高英语阅读技能的同时辅以文化背景知识内容的导入和文体知识的学习。这一理论的产生很快被用于语言和阅读研究,使复杂的外语研究在理论上出现了新方向(Freedle,1979)。也使英语阅读教学有了科学的理论依据。
