Slower Economic Growth in Asia Since the beginning of this year, some major economic growth in the Asian region has slowed down, the export demand has dropped and the stability of financial markets has been affected. Major indicators of the region’s economic conditions, such as exports and business confidence, are not optimistic. In many Asian countries, the economy is mainly driven by exports. The impact of “9.11” incident on them is also reflected in the trade figures first. For example, South Korea has already forecast that import and export in September will have dropped by nearly 12% and 17% respectively over the same period of last year, with the trade surplus reduced by more than half. Taiwan also recorded a record drop in imports and exports in September. The authorities expect exports this year to be 20% lower than last year and difficult to recover until the third quarter of 2002. Exports in the Philippines for the first eight months of the year showed its biggest drop in 21 years and the government expects full-year exports to shrink 10% to 15%.
