我县地处牡丹江市东部。与苏联水、陆交界,总面积7724平方公里,是个“三山二水五分田”的边境县。全县有20个乡、镇,232个村。在县属32万人口的居住区内,设有各级各类学校519所,其中普通完全中学5所、普通初中17所、小学附设初中班34所;城乡小学204所(其中城、乡各有一所附设弱智班)、村下伸网点小学68所;技工学校1所、职业高中3所、初中附设职业高中班4所;初中附设职业初中班7所,聋哑小学附设初职班1所;职工学校20所、乡镇农民技术学校20所、村民校135所。另外有幼儿园61所,小学附设学前班246处。全县共有各类学生8万余名,教职工5千余名。
