增加带速和提高记录密度是改进磁带存储器的两种方法。但是由于机电方面的限制,使带速比250时/秒快得多是难以达到的。然而只要用心选择记录方式和误差检测及校正方法,还是有可能使位密度和传输率提高的。最新的磁带机达到了6250位/时,它大约是不到两年前所得到的密度的四倍。因此,6400位/时的记录密度和获得四倍的数据传输率是研制新的磁带部件的主要目标,其它的要求还包括: Δ使用相位编码检测线路,用以补偿带速的变化和读写头间的偏斜。
Increasing the tape speed and increasing the recording density are two ways to improve tape storage. However, due to the mechanical and electrical limitations, it is hard to achieve a much faster belt speed than 250 hrs / second. However, as long as carefully select the recording method and error detection and correction methods, it is still possible to make the bit density and transfer rate increased. The latest drive reached 6250 bits per hour, which is about four times less dense than it was two years ago.
