Torsional vibration issues have become increasingly important in the design of internal combustion engine drives and devices that include other reciprocating mechanisms. Transatlantic Linerships - Nineteenth-Century Engineering Miracles - Multiple failure of major propulsion units has stimulated people’s first fundamental research on vibration in order to establish reliable standards in the design of mechanical components for dynamic loads. Research on unbalanced forces in large multi-cylinder reciprocating steam engines has developed to a completely established technique that will soon be used in analytical and experimental studies of torsional vibration. These methods have become an indispensable part of the design process for diesel engine drives.
