In recent years, in order to improve the performance of railway diesel engines, an anti-wear additive called chlorinated paraffin has been added to its oil to reduce the friction and wear of diesel bearings, valve mechanisms and piston ring groove areas. However, chlorine is a toxic substance, so as the issue of environmental protection becomes more and more important, the federal government and the state governments in the United States have formulated stringent requirements for strengthening the treatment of waste diesel oil from railway diesel engines. The treatment of chlorine-containing waste oil is not only complicated in process but also costly. A recently developed Amoco 6888 additive from Amoco Petroleum Additives of the United States offers hope to solve this difficult problem facing the railroad operations department. The test results show that this new chlorine-free additive not only meets the environmental requirements, saves a lot of waste oil disposal costs, and its performance as good as or even better than chlorinated additives.
