作为有着丰厚雕塑艺术积淀、具有优秀雕塑艺术传统的中国,近代雕塑体系却是从西方引进的,这种学院写实主义体系影响了中国近一个世纪的雕塑教育和雕塑艺术发展的进程。由于西方近代科技、文化、艺术的发达,雕塑教育体系的引进对中国现代雕塑的发展起了积极的推动作用。然而这种体系与我国的雕塑传统存在着相当大的距离,早在二三十年代出洋留学的雕塑学子在努力学习西方技法的同时,不断回过头来研究中国雕塑的传统,影响着他们的雕塑造型。在各时期的雕塑教学中有识之士都意识到研究中国传统雕塑的意义,几经更改的教学大纲中,始终未变的一点就是坚持对中国雕塑传统的研究,而且是安排在高班四年级上学期进行,其中包括对中国石窟艺术作一次比较集中的参观,再就是安排一次古代雕塑的临摹,以期“通过对我国古代雕塑主要石窟的参观学习,对民族传统雕塑艺术有所感受和领悟,从而把我国民族艺术雄浑博大的气派融会到自己的创作中去。”
