Historically, Western painters all attached great importance to sketching. Drawing the sketches to the highest value of painting creation should be pushed to Anglo-French painter of the 18th century. Angel is a French neoclassical representative painter who studied painting in Rome and was taught by David Major, the master of classical painting. Later, he was long-time dean of the French Fine Arts Academy in Paris. Because of his advocacy of sketches, he formed a polemic with the romanticist Delacroix, which focused on the effects of painting. Angel thinks sketches reflect a high degree of artistic honesty.
