闵广森是“扬州八怪”之一闵贞的第十世孙。自小受到家族文化熏陶,古典文学知识丰富,喜爱绘画。1959年,闵广森初中毕业报考南艺附中。应考者不下500人,闵广森从众考生中脱颖而出被录取,全扬州仅他—人。1962年,闵广森考入上海戏剧学院舞台美术系,在那里度过了令他难忘的大学浪漫生涯。1973年,闵广森分配到云南省歌舞团担任舞美设计工作。闵广森没有辜负他天生的浪漫情愫,在这块有着厚重民族人文资源的福地上,五十年辛勤耕耘,在西南边陲开垦出了一片茂盛的园地。闵广森先后在几十个歌舞剧目担任舞台美术设计、服装设计、舞剧结构策划等。这些作品分别获省级金奖、国家级金奖、国家级文华奖。其中独舞《水》和舞剧《阿诗玛》两部作品列入国家二十世纪经典作品大全。闵广森始终没有忘记他的最爱——绘画。云南的风土人情,又给了他丰富的营养,使他的作品既具东方的神秘之美,又借鉴运用了西方现代派风格,使得他屡屡创作出以强烈的个人化画风作品,在画坛独领风骚,并且在海内外产生了很大影响。德国评论家瓦尔特·格贝尔说:“闵广森的作品有充分的现代派风格,同时作为一个中国人,他没有脱离几千年来的中国文化之根。”
