I was seventeen, working as abellhop at the Sugar Maplesresort in the CatskillMountains. Most of the guestswere regulars. Families had beencoming on the same week eachsummer for generations. Many ofthe employees were regulars too,so we knew a lot of the guests bysight, some we knew by name.Others by reputation. The guests arrived on Saturdayto stay the week. The bellhopslined up, ready to carry bags andearn the standard one-dollar tip.Sometimes it was fifty cents. If wegot lucky, two dollars. But thisweek was special.
