方足布是铸行地域最广的战国布币,也是存世数量最多的一种战国布币,铸行于战国中、晚期的三晋(魏、韩、赵)、两周和燕地。主要特征是首、肩、足的拐角均呈方形,平裆,正面中间铸一竖线,中线两侧为文字,背面除中线外,两侧也各有一条斜线,并铸有外廓线。其中束腰的方足布是战国晚期燕地的铸币,亦称燕布。同时,方足布也影响到南方的楚国,在楚地诞生了楚布。本文先叙述三晋、两周的方足布,余者在“燕布和楚布——读先秦布币(六)”中再叙。
