在真主造化阴阳五行的大前提下,与中国传统五行说不同,马注提出火风水土四行说。风(气)具有掌控、调节万物(包括人事)的作用;土是万物之体,是万物(万物之形)构成的基本元素;水是万物(万物之形)之命,是万物(万物之形)存在的先决条件;火是温度,是万物(万物之形)存在的必备条件。风是对温度的调节,也是气之动力;金、木因是土之再生,故是万物(万物之形)存在的辅助条件。五行(四行)与人身也有重要关系,五行决定着身心,四行决定着人性。
